About Madras University
Madras University started an institute of distance education in 1981. It is located in Chepauk, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. The institute also received an A++ grade from NAAC. All programs are recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the DEB. Currently, it provides 16 undergraduate programs, 22 postgraduate programs, 19 diploma programs, and 16 certificate courses. All these programs are offered in 2 phases – academic year admissions (July – June) and calendar year admissions(January – December). University of Madras – Institute of Distance Education has already started its UG admission for the session 2025. All the UG programmes are available in open and distance mode. Lectures will be conducted in English and Tamil. Undergraduate courses are offered for a duration of 3 years and 6 semesters. To be eligible for the UG program, students need to pass a higher secondary education examination conducted by the government of Tamil Nadu or any other state board. Admission is ongoing for the PG program at the University of Madras- Institute of Distance Education for the July session 2025. Students can apply for any Postgraduate courses like MA, MBA, MCOM, etc. These programs are offered for the duration of 2 years over four semesters. To be eligible for admission, students need to pass a UG degree program from a UGC recognized university. The minimum required mark will be different for all courses. Madras University Distance Education Diploma/Certificate Admission 2025
Institute of Distance Education has opened its admission window for the academic year 2025. All the Diploma and certificate courses will be conducted in an academic year session only. Classes will be offered in two media, mainly English and Tamil. Students can avail these programs in ODL mode. There is no age bar.
Institute of Distance Education offers diploma courses for a duration of 1 year, along with semesters with credits. To qualify for the diploma program, students who have a qualified bachelor’s degree examination from Ta hai University or a UGC/AIU recognized university equivalent thereto by this University under 10+2+3 or 10+3+2 or 11+1+3 or 11+2+2 pattern can apply for admission to any diploma program.
Certificate courses are applicable for 3months/6 months and even 1 year. Applicants who have qualified higher secondary education examinations conducted by the government of Tamil Nadu or equivalent examinations are eligible for admission to certificate programs.

All students should be very careful while filling out the application form. Also, applicants must make sure to submit the form before the deadline.

- Click on the new user option and enter your name, email ID, password, mobile number, captcha code, and click on CREATE ACCOUNT.
- Enter the OTP sent to your number, and press the enter button. Your account will be created.
- Now log in with your password and username.
- Select your course and fill in all the related details correctly.
- Upload scanned photograph, signature, and respective educational documents, and click on SAVE AND PREVIEW.
- Now select the PAY NOW option to pay the program fee using a credit card, debit card, or netbanking, etc.
- Once payment is done, IDE will send enrollment numbers through acknowledgment slips.
- Registration fee once submitted will not be refunded, and submission of fake documents will result in cancellation of the application form.
Documents Required For Admission to Madras University Distance Education
Below is the list of original documents required, and self-attested copies of the same have to be submitted for all UG/PG admissions. Documents include:
- Transfer certificate and migration certificate.
- 10+2 marksheet, provisional pass certificate, diploma, and degree certificate.
- The English version of the certificate attested by the gazette officer is required if documents submitted are in any language other than English.
- Applicants who have qualified their examination from a foreign board need to submit an EQUIVALENCE CERTIFICATE issued by AIU (Association of indian universities).
- Students from other boards are required to submit COBSE- a copy of the Council of Board of School Education recognition list, along with the UG degree/certificate program application.
- Applicants from private universities, other state universities, and deemed universities must attach a copy of UGC UGC-approved list with the PG application.
- Students who have done their diploma from any state technical board must have a copy of the equivalence certificate approved by the Directorate of School Education, Government of Tamil Nadu, proving that the qualification is equal to the HSC examination conducted by the Board of Examination, Chennai.
- Students who fail to submit any of the above documents or certificates may be liable to rejection of their application form.
- Students who have not passed the 10+2+3 or 11+1+3 pattern of examination or have passed under the open university system of this university/another recognized university are not eligible for admission.
